Claude For Research

Research — gathering information, synthesising sources, and producing actionable insights — is one of Claude's strongest use cases. Whether you're researching a market, a competitor, a technical topic, or a business question, Claude can compress multi-hour research tasks into minutes. This guide covers how to use Claude for business research effectively.

Claude For Research

What Claude Research Can and Can't Do

What Claude can do: Synthesise information across topics, explain concepts, analyse documents and data you provide, structure research questions, identify what you should be looking for, and produce well-organised research summaries from information in its training data (through its knowledge cutoff) or from documents you share with it.

What Claude can't do: Browse the internet in real-time (without web-enabled tools), access paywalled databases, retrieve current pricing or stock data, or recall events after its knowledge cutoff date. For current information, you need to provide it to Claude rather than ask Claude to retrieve it.

This distinction shapes how you use Claude for research: use it as an analyst that synthesises information you gather, rather than as a search engine that retrieves current data.

Market Research

Market sizing and structure: Ask Claude to explain the structure of a market, the key players, typical business models, and market dynamics. Claude's training data includes substantial business and market information that makes it a strong starting point for market orientation.

"Give me an overview of the B2B SaaS customer success platform market: key players, typical pricing models, main buyer personas, and the key purchase criteria."

Customer interview synthesis: After conducting customer interviews, paste the transcripts or notes to Claude and ask for analysis: "I've interviewed 10 potential customers about [topic]. Identify the common themes, the most frequently mentioned pain points, and the differences between different customer segments."

Survey analysis: Paste open-ended survey responses and ask Claude to identify themes, sentiment, and notable insights.

Competitor research: Provide Claude with information you've gathered about competitors (website copy, reviews, feature lists, pricing) and ask for synthesis: "Compare these three competitors on: positioning, pricing model, target customer, and differentiation. Identify where each is strongest and weakest."

Due Diligence and Company Research

For investment, partnership, or acquisition due diligence, Claude can help structure and synthesise research.

Research framework: Ask Claude to generate a due diligence research framework for a specific context: "What questions should I investigate when evaluating a B2B SaaS acquisition target? Structure them by category."

Document analysis: Paste financial reports, market analyses, or business documents for Claude to summarise and highlight key points: "Summarise this annual report and highlight: business performance trends, risk factors, competitive position, and management's stated strategic priorities."

Red flag identification: "Here are notes from my research on this company. Identify any potential red flags or areas that warrant deeper investigation."

Technical Research

For technical topics, Claude is particularly strong because it can explain complex subjects at the appropriate depth for your audience.

Technology evaluation: "Compare these three database technologies for our use case: high-read, moderate-write, unstructured data, 100GB dataset." Claude provides a structured comparison with clear tradeoffs.

Architecture research: "What are the common architectural patterns for a multi-tenant SaaS application, and what are the tradeoffs of each?"

Standard and specification research: "Explain the key requirements of GDPR as they apply to a SaaS company storing EU customer data."

Literature and Document Synthesis

Claude's 200k token context window makes it capable of reading and synthesising very long documents — entire research papers, long reports, full RFPs — that would take hours to process manually.

RFP analysis: "Analyse this RFP and identify: the buyer's top priorities, their evaluation criteria, the key requirements our solution must meet, and any red flags or unusual requirements."

Contract review: "Review this service agreement and identify: the key obligations on our side, any unusual clauses, any liability or IP risks, and anything we should negotiate before signing."

Research paper synthesis: "Summarise this academic paper in terms that a non-technical business reader can understand. Focus on the findings and their practical business implications."

Building a Research Workflow

The highest-ROI research use case is systematic: instead of ad-hoc research tasks, build a recurring research workflow.

Weekly competitive intelligence: every Monday, a researcher aggregates news, reviews, and updates about 3-5 competitors (using web research or news services). The aggregated information is sent to Claude via Make.com for synthesis. A structured competitive intelligence briefing is delivered to the strategy team each Tuesday morning.

This turns competitive intelligence from "something we do when we have time" into a systematic weekly input to decision-making.

“Claude is an analyst, not a researcher. Bring it information and it synthesises brilliantly. Ask it to find current information and verify — its knowledge has a cutoff.”
